Getting Started
Story Maps for Jira runs inside a Jira Software project. Before you begin, confirm that the app is installed and that you can browse and edit issues in the project.
Open the app
- Open the Jira Software project that contains the backlog you want to map.
- Select Story Maps in the project navigation.
- If the app asks which issue type forms the backbone, select the project’s epic issue type.
The Basic edition provides multiple story maps in each project. Advanced Story Maps adds story maps that span Jira projects and can use other issue and link types.
Build the first slice
Start with a small part of the user journey. Add or select the epics that describe its main steps, then place stories, tasks, or bugs below the relevant epic. Jira remains the source of truth for each issue.
Use the Add control to create or find work without leaving the map.
Arrange the backbone from left to right in the order a user encounters it. Within each column, place the most important work first. A useful first map is clear enough to support a planning conversation; it does not need to contain the entire backlog.
Plan delivery
Open the swimlane selector to view work by sprint or release. Drag an issue between lanes to update its Jira assignment. The available lanes depend on the project’s Jira features, board configuration, and your permissions.
